A white house set low in a desert garden, its corners rounded as if worn by the wind rather than cut. From the gravel drive only a run of pale walls shows, broken by one arch.
The entrance is a sequence, not a door: dark stone pavers laid in the sand, broad travertine steps, a stepped arch and inside it a door of carved oak. Behind the house the rooms open through dark-framed glass onto a pool and a raised spa, a pergola, and a garden of agave, yucca and cactus that needs no water it does not already get.
Inside, lime plaster and oak. The living room rises two storeys; an oak stair hangs off the wall with no stringer beneath it, screened only by thin black rods. A slatted oak wall and lit niches hold the height, and the stone floor runs on unbroken into the kitchen, so the house reads as one warm room under a white shell.
