SICILY

A concrete house laid along an olive terrace in Sicily, low enough that the dry-stone walls already on the site still set the horizon. From the track below only the edge of the slab shows.

The plan follows the terraces instead of cutting across them: the volumes step down the slope on the line of the old retaining walls, and a long pool runs between them, holding the sky where the ground used to fall away. The upper pavilion takes the bedrooms; the lower one opens along its full length to the valley.

Board-formed concrete carries the structure and the ceilings, left with the grain of the shuttering on it. Below it the walls are the island’s own limestone, stacked dry as it has been stacked here for centuries. Inside, travertine floors and oak joinery, and glass that slides away until the living room has no wall at all towards the olives.
